Smart cards provide an effective tool for portable hardware storage of secretkeys critically needed in many recent multimedia applications. Based on a more generalized view of the unbalanced Feistel network structure, we propose a more general structure that key-links two strong private-key block ciphers (invulnerable to adaptive/chosen plaintext/ciphertext attacks) in a reversible way suitable for encryption/decryption using smart cards. The pseudo-randomness, confusion and diffusion properties as well as provable security of the overall obtained block cipher are based on the strength of the two employed ciphers and key-linking functions. We then present an efficient, forgery and inversion secure smart card with minimum number of interactions with the host.
